🔍How to spot a human flea

  1. Small (1.5-3.0 mm), wingless and laterally flattened insect that jumps strongly
  2. Dark brown to black and shiny with backward-directed bristles
  3. Lacks genal and pronotal combs (rows of spines) that are present on cat and dog fleas (Ctenocephalides spp.)
  4. Short head compared with some other flea genera

🔍How to spot a chigoe flea

  1. Look for a small round white to yellowish nodule with a central dark dot (the posterior breathing/egg pore) on the skin, commonly on toes, feet, heels or around nails.
  2. Lesion is usually painful and itchy and may have surrounding inflammation and secondary infection.
  3. History of walking barefoot or contact with sandy soil in tropical/subtropical regions increases likelihood.

?Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a human flea and a chigoe flea?

Pulex irritans does not burrow into the skin; it is a free-living, blood-feeding flea and appears as a small flattened jumping flea rather than an embedded nodule.

Is a human flea or a chigoe flea more dangerous?

Human flea: Biting pest. Chigoe flea: Burrowing parasite. Pulex irritans bites cause itchy, irritating welts and can trigger allergic dermatitis in sensitive people. Female Tunga penetrans burrows into the epidermis causing a painful, itchy lesion (tungiasis).

Identification from photos is never certain: don't handle insects you can't identify, and get medical advice for bites, stings or allergic reactions.
