📸Tips for a good identification

  1. Get close enough that the bug fills a good part of the photo, and keep it in focus.
  2. Photograph it from above. For spiders, a shot of the back and legs helps most.
  3. Use daylight or a bright room, without flash glare.
  4. Don't touch it to get a better shot. A photo through a glass or jar works fine.

?Frequently asked questions

How do I identify a bug from a picture?

Upload a clear photo of the insect or spider above. We'll tell you what it most likely is, whether it bites or stings, and link to its full guide when we have one.

Is this insect identifier free?

Yes. You can identify up to 3 photos a day on this page. For unlimited scans, the full species guide and a history of your finds, get the Insect Scanner iPhone app.

Can it identify spiders, ticks and other bugs?

Yes. It recognizes insects as well as spiders, ticks, scorpions, centipedes, millipedes, woodlice and other arthropods.

How accurate is it?

Identifications are made with AI and are usually right for clear photos of common species, but they can be wrong. Never handle a bug because it was identified as harmless, and get medical advice for bites or stings.

What happens to my photo?

Your photo is sent to our server and to OpenAI to identify the insect. We don't store it, and it isn't used to identify you.
