American dog tick vs Brown dog tick
These two are easy to mix up. Here's how to tell an American dog tick from a brown dog tick, and whether either one bites or stings.

American dog tick
Dermacentor variabilis

Brown dog tick
Rhipicephalus sanguineus
≠The key differences
Brown dog tick is more uniformly reddish-brown without the pale scutum ornamentation and commonly infests kennels and indoor environments.
Larger and patterned (cream and brown markings) scutum; Dermacentor species are not uniformly reddish-brown and are less likely to complete life cycles indoors.

Is an American dog tick or a brown dog tick more dangerous?
